Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Honors Those Still Standing in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS, Domestic Violence and Cancer

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter is committed to bringing awareness to and supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS, Cancer, and Domestic Violence. The Still Standing Survivors Luncheon was created to provide a venue to honor survivors and pay tribute to those who are no longer with us. Attendees wore their most fabulous pair of shoes and stood for a great cause!

The 3rd Annual Still Standing Luncheon was held Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Brookland Baptist Church Banquet & Conference Center located in West Columbia. This year the focus was HIV/AIDS and Deadra Malloy, Project Coordinator for P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E (Proactive, Optimistic, Sisters, In Touch, Involved, Validated and Empowered) Voices, an advocacy arm of the SC HIV/AIDS Crisis Taskforce was the keynote speaker. She gave a dynamic and inspirational speech about her own trials, relationships and successes as a HIV+ woman, and encouraged women to keep fighting and keep learning about this chronic disease.

In South Carolina, nearly 25% of new HIV cases are among women; moreover, over 79% of those women are African-American. Founded in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek letter organization established by African American women designed to alleviate social issues that affect girls and women and generously serve all mankind. Over 100 women joined us as we made the statement that we are Still Standing in the fight and Upsilon Omega Omega donated $2,000 to the SC HIV/AIDS Council to continue HIV testing and research in the Midlands.
